Crown Ducal by Charlotte Rhead

Backstamps Styles on Reproductions

Items of pottery with backstamps similar to the ones pictured above are becoming quite common. These marks are composites of backstamps used by AG Richardson Crown Ducal Ware and HJ Wood Bursley Ware.

Pottery with these types of backstamps are believed to be of modern manufacture. If you find them attractive then fair enough - but note that they are not the work of Charlotte Rhead, (1885-1947).

Sometimes a mark in red (see image left) has been seen alongside the typical marks seen on reproductions. It has the DNW initials of the manufacturer.

Recently pattern 4921 has appeared on shapes 207 and 243, as well as more modern shapes. They look to be examples of the real thing, but if you check the backstamp markings and it includes a transfer “Charlotte Rhead” signature you will know it is a reproduction. Also the chargers are only 11.5” in diameter.

Reproduction charger from DNW website

The website pages where the manufacturer displayed and sold the reproductions has disappeared but I have put a link from my library page to an archived page which shows an example of a reproduction charger on sale for £35. Give the page time to load - it will take longer than usual to recover it from the web archives.

There used to be a forum on the Clarice Cliff website where collectors can discuss the topic of Charlotte Rhead reproductions. If you would like to join in the fight against fraudulent resellers of modern pottery dressed up as originals you may wish to participate.
