Pattern 4724 Coronation
The first of many designs for the lucrative commemorative market. Charlottes chequer design of alternating colour and blank square and the royal cypher was very successful considering the amount sold for each coronation must have occurred in only a few months.

The key dates for estimating when production occurred for each cypher are that Edward became King on 20th January 1936, he abdicated on 11th December 1936 and the coronation of George was on 12th May 1937.

Grouping the two colourways of 4724 and 4725, surprisingly the number seen split between Edward and George are similar with George slightly more numerous, particularly with the blue version 4725, and so the sometimes heard statement that George labelled items are rarer due to customer fatigue does not appear to hold true for Charlottes design.
